After another long drive, we made it to Denver just in time to see fans packing into Invesco Field for Monday Night Football. I’ll take Mello and the Nugs personally, but I assumed it wouldn’t get in the way of us having a nice time at the Hi-Dive, one of my favorite venues in the country.
Why? They’ve got a wonderful staff that seems to actually enjoy having bands in to play, a roomy and comfortable basement green room, excellent sound, and a restaurant next door that is truly awesome.
Sputnik, where the sandwhich madness below was born, is the next door eatery/bar where Hi-Dive treats bands to dinner. They’ve got an interesting variety—from Cuban and Vietnamese sandwhiches to a giant mixed ramen bowl and salads/etc. They also feature a sauce menu that Evangelicals give our stamp of approval. And we know sauces. Sputnik offers Banana Ketchup, an onion table sauce, Green Chimichurri, Habenero Jelly, and more.
We played to an enthusiastic crowd and even got to encore our cover of Echo and The Bunnymen’s The Cutter. Great review here (http://bit.ly/23hTWM) as well! Then the venue transformed into karaoke night and we couldn’t leave before Todd took on Foreigner’s “Double Vision” and I took a crack at Simple Mind’s “Don’t You Forget About Me.” I’m not usually much of a karaoke-er, but some wasted dude told me that he was moved and someone threw a rose on stage as I finished the la la la la’s. Incredible!
Thanks to Jud for the posh accomodations! Always good to be back in Birdman territory!
